Photo of Dr. MonicaPorcelain crowns are designed to repair issues with teeth while still maintaining a brilliant white smile.

You can maintain your gorgeous grin regardless of any chips or breaks that may come about because porcelain provides a natural match for your teeth. Rather than covering the unsightly metal in your mouth, you can show off the glow from within.

Dental crowns: porcelain vs. metal

All dental crowns are designed to repair missing or broken parts of a tooth. They can be made of metal, porcelain, or Zirconia. Metal crowns are the strongest and most common dental caps available, but they are also unpleasant to look at. That is why most dentists reserve them for back teeth.

Porcelain crowns are still strong and durable, but they look like tooth enamel rather than metal. They are the best options for anterior teeth because they are as close to actual teeth as you can get. Completely porcelain crowns are not fit for teeth you use for chewing, which is why some patients opt for metal-to-porcelain teeth in those areas. These are coated with porcelain for aesthetics, but they still have metal behind them.

If you talk to the team here at Sparkle Dental, we can help you figure out which dental crown style is right for you.

How porcelain crowns are installed

Here are the basic steps in any porcelain crown installation:

  1. You come in for a consultation so we can evaluate your teeth.
  2. We create a mold to send to the lab for your new tooth.
  3. We select a shade of porcelain that perfectly matches your teeth so that your crown does not look out of place.
  4. We make a temporary crown at no cost to you that you can wear until your installation appointment.
  5. On your second appointment, we take the temporary crown off and put the new crown on, checking for color, fit, and size.
  6. If everything looks natural, we cement the crown in place for a permanent fit.

In the rare event that we need to alter your crown during the second appointment, we may be able to do so in-house. If major alterations need to be made, we will give you another temporary crown to use until your new tooth is complete once again.

Porcelain crown maintenance

In order to keep your porcelain crowns looking and functioning their best, you need to come in for two dental cleanings per year. You will also need to undergo yearly x-rays so we can track any physical changes occurring with the crown. As always, you should brush and floss your teeth at home regularly to prevent tooth decay. This will ensure that your porcelain crown remains a permanent part of your smile.
